Diari de Barcelona

Diari de Barcelona was one of the oldest newspapers in Europe, founded in 1792. After some interruptions in its history due to the Spanish Civil War and changes in its shareholders councils, it became active again in 1998, being published exclusively online since then. In 2006, Lavinia Interactiva decide to bet on a new publishing format, exploring the possibilities of Adobe's Flash technology.

An innovative way of doing journalism

Home page of Diari de Barcelona

The idea of the digital newspaper was to be a multimedia news portal about Barcelona and its people, with four different sections: News, Interactives, Maps and Voices.

For the News sections, just like watching it on the TV, a host would present a set of short videos that were recorded and published daily in the website. The user could pause, rewind, replay and choose any specific video on the list. And also browse the past days to watch the news from a specific date.

At the bottom of the page, a news slider brought all the last-minute news.

In-depth interactives

Another section was a series of in-depth interactives exploring subjects or events happening in the city, like when Woody Allen was filming in town or the celebration of the patron of the city, La Mercè.

Those pieces were tailor-made for each of the subjetcs and were updated every 3 days.

An interactive about the public transportation fees
An interactive about the 25 years of the fight against the HIV
News from Barcelona in more than 15 languages

News from Barcelona in more than 15 languages

Since this is a very cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world, why not have a section with news from Barcelona in another language? This section made it possible. Every 10 days, a news brief was made in Japanese, French, Italian, Arabic, and more than 15 languages.

I was responsible for the general design, usability and Flash programming.
